The Harsco health and safety solution
Harsco originally approached Touch4 to come up with a health and safety solution after a serious accident at the Port Talbot Steelworks involving a Harsco employee. The incident made the management question the whole approach to health & safety training on the site, and indeed at other sites run by the industrial giant.
After studying different methods of teaching health and safety, it was decided that regular short bursts of information was by far the most effective method of delivery. One of the inherent site-specific issues at Port Talbot Steelworks is the sheer size of the site — and how to monitor the ongoing health & safety training when some staff work several miles from any others.
The Safety Burst quiz was designed in a “who wants to be a millionaire-style” quiz to make it fun and engaging, and allowed employees to take part in a 4 question & answer session about the Health & Safety procedures on the Port Talbot site. If the employees answered the questions correctly, they won a small financial reward which was deposited into the work’s Christmas fund.
With all of the data captured on the central system, Harsco monitored which members of staff were up-to-date with the health and safety procedures and which employees required further training. The unqualified success of the system resulted in an international health and safety award, and the rolling out of the system across other international sites.
